Mantramancy was formed in Melbourne in 1997 by Christopher Young, Dean Frenkel, Linda Laasi, Bruce Rogers, John O’Hagan and Brendan Hains - all are artists with their instruments – This album features John playing double bass with a bow, Bruce playing didge like a bass, Dean playing the voice like a flute or a didgeridoo, Chris playing flute harmonics like a voice, Linda singing the alto sax, Chris playing the alto sax like it is a voice, Brendan’s soundscape patterns… perhaps that is why Mantramancy sounds like a larger group than it really is. Inspired by good creative energy, unfamiliar musics and journeys through old and new musical worlds, there is nothing self-indulgent about this. Mantramancy’s combined musical vision accesses thousands of years of human history – from shamanic vocalising and religious chant and bridges it with modern layers of creative jazz, progressive rock and world fusion. In the meeting place between nature and culture, you’ll find Mantramancy.
Recorded in 1998. Released in 2016. Band member, dear friend and immense talent, Bruce Rogers passed away just prior to this release. Great working magic with you mate.
